Protection & Control Engineer (Renewables T&D)

 

Leap29 are currently working with a client on an exciting opportunity in Texas.

The role of Protection and Control Specialist reports directly to the Transmission Planning Manager. This position encompasses various responsibilities and employs robust technical principles in the planning, organization, and deployment of protective and control measures for the transmission system. It also encompasses the monitoring of equipment while participating in the establishment of standards and the design of engineered projects. Furthermore, it involves devising technical solutions to enhance the efficiency of existing infrastructure, reduce operational costs, minimize potential risks and losses, and apply technical expertise to prevent adverse impacts on the facility, personnel, and the environment. Additionally, it involves leading the development and revision of maintenance programs, policies, and procedures, encompassing preventive, predictive, and corrective measures, all aimed at optimizing the operation and maintaining the value of electrical facilities.

 

Responsibilities

  • Apply technical principles in advising and facilitating the development and implementation of safety, environmental protection, NERC compliance, and asset preservation standards in accordance with company directives.
  • Spearhead the establishment and maintenance of standards pertaining to protection, control, monitoring, metering, and communications, and provide expert guidance that aligns with these standards and supports the company's objectives and initiatives.
  • Apply technical expertise to evaluate and analyse transmission protective equipment and related auxiliary systems, while proposing cost-effective enhancements for repair, construction, and refurbishment.
  • Oversee or participate in various projects assigned by the Engineering Manager. These projects may include tasks such as request for proposals, proposal review and recommendation for contract awards, preliminary engineering, engineering assessments, design specifications, drawings, contract recommendations, job plans, project assessments, quality assurance, and project finalization.
  • Assess emerging technologies and technological advancements in the industry, with a focus on their potential applications to reduce project and operational expenses and achieve corporate objectives related to safety and environmental protection.
  • Formulate, review, and implement protective settings in line with company protection schemes.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC and CIP standards related to facilities.
  • Provide support to the ERCOT System Protection Working Group (SPWG) and maintain the short-circuit dataset for the system.

 

Experience And Qualifications

 

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited university.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Texas, with consideration extended to EITs or Technologists possessing strong technical competencies.
  • A minimum of five years of progressive experience in electrical engineering, particularly in the context of an electrical utility.
  • Proficiency in conceptual design of transmission protection and monitoring systems, with preference given to those with expertise in SEL and GE relay systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of transmission, encompassing protection and control, SCADA, communications, and metering systems.
  • Experience in analysing transmission faults and relay misoperations and devising corrective measures.
  • Familiarity with the automation of transmission systems.
  • Field experience and competence working with high-voltage equipment.
  • Capability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Physical fitness for performing routine field tasks safely.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Profound understanding of project management processes.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to various system locations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
