Electrical Secondary Engineer
Job Description
As a Secondary Engineer, you will play a key role in the design, specification, and integration of protection, control, and automation systems for substations and other power infrastructure. Working alongside primary engineers, project managers, and clients, you will be responsible for ensuring that all secondary systems meet performance, safety, and compliance standards throughout the project lifecycle.
You will be part of the Energy Transition unit, which focuses on delivering sustainable and future-proof energy solutions in transmission, distribution, and grid modernization projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and develop protection, control, SCADA, and communication systems for HV/MV substations
Prepare secondary design deliverables, including wiring diagrams, schematics, cable lists, and panel layouts
Specify and configure IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices), relays, and communication protocols (IEC 61850, DNP3, etc.)
Support FAT, SAT, and commissioning of secondary systems
Coordinate with primary engineers and CAD teams to ensure seamless integration of control and protection systems
Ensure compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements
Contribute to risk assessments, technical reports, and documentation
Support clients throughout project phases, from design through testing and energization
Requirements:
BSc or MSc in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field
3+ years of experience in secondary systems engineering for substations (protection and control)
Strong knowledge of IEC standards and utility practices (IEC 61850, IEC 60255, etc.)
Familiarity with protection relays (e.g., Siemens, ABB, GE, SEL) and substation automation systems
Experience with CAD and engineering tools (e.g., EPLAN, AutoCAD, DigSILENT, or equivalent)
Excellent documentation and communication skills in English
Proactive mindset, strong attention to detail, and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
Willingness to travel for site support, testing, or commissioning activities
Dutch language is a plus
