Senior Electrical Design Engineer – Permanent Position – Peterborough, UK

Job Purpose:
Responsible for designing and delivering electrical control systems for food process equipment to meet the requirements of customer contracts and internal development projects. This includes anything from configuring standard control systems to designing bespoke electrical solutions. You will also provide technical support across multiple business areas when needed, including sales, manufacturing, installation/commissioning, and customer service.

The Job (Main Duties):

• Responsible for designing, configuring, and issuing electrical systems and control panels to meet contract requirements and schedules.
• Produce accurate and detailed electrical schematics, panel layouts, cable schedules, and system documentation to minimize issues during assembly, installation, and commissioning stages.
• Ensure all electrical designs comply with company standards, quality procedures, and relevant electrical regulations and safety standards (e.g., IEC, UL, CE marking).
• Specify and select electrical components and systems, including drives, sensors, control panels, and PLCs, ensuring they meet functional, safety, and legislative requirements.
• Support manufacturing and assembly teams by resolving electrical and control system issues efficiently using sound engineering practices.
• Seek and implement continuous improvement opportunities to enhance equipment reliability, safety, and cost-efficiency.
• Participate in the development, testing, and validation of new electrical systems and technologies for existing and new equipment platforms.
• Maintain accurate electrical documentation and a well-structured Bill of Materials (BOM).
• Provide technical input and support to sales, project management, and customer services functions.
• Liaise with suppliers and sub-contractors to ensure outsourced electrical systems and components meet design and quality expectations.
• Perform necessary engineering calculations and analysis to validate electrical design decisions (e.g., load calculations, short circuit analysis).

Candidate Profile: (Experience, Skills and Knowledge)

• A motivated and confident electrical design engineer with relevant industry experience.
• Proficient in electrical CAD and design tools (e.g., EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar).
• Experienced in producing robust engineering calculations to justify design decisions.
• Familiar with electrical component selection for low-volume industrial machinery.
• Strong time management and task prioritisation skills.
• Comfortable presenting technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience in the food processing or packaging machinery sector is highly beneficial.
• Good understanding of UK and international electrical standards and regulations.
• Experience with PLCs, HMI development, and integration with mechanical systems is desirable.
• Able to work independently or collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary engineering team.
