Automation & Control Engineer – Schiedam, Netherlands

Contract Duration: Initial 12-month contract working via Leap29, after the 12 months you will go into a potential permanent position

Language Requirement: English and preferably Dutch speaking

As an Automation & Control (A&C) Engineer, you will leverage your technical expertise and professional experience to support the development and delivery of products to customers. Under the guidance of the Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for engineering and integrating electro-technical solutions throughout all phases of the product lifecycle—from proposals to aftermarket support. These solutions may include systems such as Cranes and Jacking Systems.

Success in this role requires a strong understanding of the commercial impact of engineering decisions, keen attention to detail, the ability to work collaboratively within a team, and a results-driven approach to delivering client-focused solutions. Additionally, you will serve as the technical focal point for {specialism, e.g., Instrumentation}, ensuring the successful completion of deliverables for quoting, design, and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to engineering projects through design, analysis, verification, and technical coordination.
  • Lead the design and development of assigned systems, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Review and coordinate third-party documentation to ensure technical accuracy and integration with project requirements.
  • Define and maintain system interfaces within the assigned work scope.
  • Develop best practices, work methods, and standards to drive continuous improvement.
  • Ensure all engineering deliverables align with system requirements and project goals.
  • Participate in internal design reviews while maintaining awareness of commercial implications.

Specific Technical Responsibilities:

  • Design, engineer, and implement Automation & Control systems, including:
  • System Requirements Specification
  • Functional Design Specification (FDS)
  • Software Technical Documentation (STD)
  • Validate A&C system designs through system studies and testing methods such as:
  • Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
  • Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Testing
  • Functional Testing during Commissioning
  • Manage interfaces with secondary systems, including electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic components.
  • Prepare for and participate in FATs and HIL tests for A&C systems.

Required Skills & Qualifications:Essential:

  • BSc in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, with a minor in Industrial Automation.
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken).
  • Dependable, flexible, and a strong team player.

Experience with:

  • Siemens TIA Portal
  • MATLAB
  • AutoCAD
  • Teamcenter

Quality Assurance:

  • Perform duties in accordance with Quality Assurance procedures and departmental guidelines.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and lessons learned processes.
  • Recommend and implement preventive and corrective actions.

Training & Development:

  • Participate in relevant training programs as required.
  • Health, Safety & Environment (HSE):
  • Adhere to all Health & Safety policies, procedures, and training requirements.
  • Maintain a safety-conscious approach and report any hazards to the HSE representative.
  • Propose preventive and corrective actions to enhance workplace safety.
