Job Description

Director of Interconnection – Distributed Generation
 
Leap29 are recruiting for a Director Interconnection DG to be based ideally from New York or Houston. The Director of Interconnection for Distributed Generation will oversee the company's interconnection strategies and operations, focusing on market and commercial aspects for Distributed Generation both behind the meter and smaller distribution connected community solar projects. Key responsibilities include assessing transmission and distribution tariffs, costs, timelines, designs, and processes across various markets. This role will also contribute to shaping the strategic direction of both the development team and the broader organization.
 
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and manage a portfolio of interconnection studies, tasks, schedules, and follow-up actions.
Lead a team of 4-8 Interconnection Engineers, guiding their performance metrics and career development.
Drive continuous improvement of interconnection standards and procedures.
Act as the primary liaison with independent system operators (ISOs), regional transmission organizations (RTOs), transmission service providers, and utilities for interconnection activities.
Facilitate information exchanges between pre-construction, engineering, and development teams to ensure project schedules are met.
Develop strategies for project interconnections at state and regional levels, focusing on grid capacity and system impacts.
Coordinate the preparation and submission of interconnection applications, working with internal teams, external consultants, and utilities.
Review, analyze, and interpret interconnection results to inform project strategies.
Identify, contract, and manage consultants to support interconnection processes, including deliverables, studies, and engineering reviews.
Evaluate system cost upgrades related to interconnections and adjust project schedules as needed.
Perform or oversee power flow simulations to predict future system conditions and guide project siting, interconnection agreements (IA), power purchase agreements (PPA), financing, and M&A activities.
Provide interconnection insights for bid proposals and site selection processes.
Address and manage disputes related to interconnection and ensure timely resolution.
Communicate interconnection timelines, processes, and costs to the Development, Pre-Construction, and Engineering teams.
Regularly engage with the team and leadership, including periodic in-person meetings at the NYC headquarters, to foster collaboration.
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
Distributed Generation - behind the meter and smaller distribution connected community solar projects
At least 8 years of experience in generation interconnection and transmission planning, gained in sectors such as infrastructure development, electric utilities, or energy consultancy.
Expertise in markets like CAISO, PJM, SPP, ISO-NE, or other RTOs.
Solid knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals and three-phase power systems.
Proficiency in power system software (e.g., PSS/e, TARA, Aspen One-Liner) and power flow analysis.
Strong understanding of interconnection study reports and their technical and financial implications.
Familiarity with RTO and utility tariffs, guidelines, and practices.
Deep knowledge of U.S. power markets, particularly in solar and battery energy storage interconnections.
Extensive experience in project development, permitting, and contracting for storage and solar projects.
Excellent research, analytical, and communication skills.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated with a proactive problem-solving approach.
 
Preferred:
Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
Comprehensive understanding of protection principles for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and substation equipment.
