Job Description

Leap29 are currently assisting a client who is on the lookout for a VP of Transmission and Interconnection in the U.S.

We're on the lookout for an adept leader in utility-scale transmission and interconnection to actively assist in expanding the portfolio of greenfield renewable energy projects across the US. This position not only demands technical leadership but also necessitates a commercial perspective and the ability to strategize effectively. The chosen individual will play a crucial role in making everyday project-related decisions. Initial focus will be on regions within SPP, MISO, ERCOT, PJM, and WECC. The ideal candidate has the flexibility to work remotely but will be able to commute to Texas when required.

Job Responsibilities

- Lead a dynamic team of utility scale renewable energy developers, guiding them through regional injection capacity analysis and the comprehensive interconnection process. This includes assessing the financial implications, risks, and necessary securities from the initial interconnection request to SGIA execution and project commissioning.

- Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer (CDO) to formulate and implement strategies for greenfield projects across the US.

- Spearhead communications and foster strong relationships with Independent System Operators (ISOs), Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs), transmission service providers, and industry experts to ensure the smooth progression of projects.

- Oversee the process of interconnection studies, offering strategic advice to the development team on mitigating risks and achieving construction readiness within set timelines.

- Oversee various projects at different stages of development, managing their interconnection processes efficiently.

- Supervise the technical evaluation of crucial project equipment such as inverters, main power transformers, and high-voltage circuit breakers from the standpoint of interconnection.

- Engage in the development and fine-tuning of internal procedures, coordinate with external consultants, aid in the planning and adjustment of project timelines and budgets, represent the organization at industry events, and contribute to the leadership of the Development team in the US.

- Exhibit proficiency in identifying and conducting thorough due diligence on potential renewable energy project acquisitions in specific markets.

- Ensure transparent and prompt reporting on project statuses.

- Possess strong computing skills and a keen interest in evaluating new software tools that aid in analyzing project transmission and injection capacity scenarios.

Requirements

- Over 12 years of experience in high voltage interconnection for renewable energy projects, including at least 4 years in a management role.

- Skilled at excelling in a remote, entrepreneurial setting.

- Must have knowledge of key power markets, including SPP, MISO, ERCOT, PJM, and WECC.

- Comfortable managing both internal teams and external consultants to continuously advance interconnection efforts across various project phases.

- Recent experience in the interconnection design process, including optimizing one-line project diagrams and familiarity with modeling using PSSE and PSCAD.

- Profound ability to cultivate robust relationships with Independent System Operators (ISOs), utilities, and transmission service providers.

- Demonstrates leadership through accessibility, integrity, professional zeal, empathy, and by setting an example.

- An agile thinker and effective leader who pays close attention to detail and possesses a relentless dedication.

- Capable of working efficiently with teams from multiple disciplines across different time zones.

- Goal-focused with an organized approach to leadership, fostering team empowerment and accountability.

- Proficient in analyzing options, communicating potential solutions to management, and problem-solving.

- Shows resilience and determination in guiding teams towards achieving project milestones.

- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, particularly in a remote work context.

- Open to up to 30% domestic travel with the possibility of occasional trips to Europe.

- A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field is preferred.
